Practitioners’ Views on Essential Coursework, Skills, and Fieldwork in Organizational Behavior Management Graduate Training Programs
Working OBM practitioners say graduate tracks must teach performance management, systems analysis, and behavior-change procedures plus communication skills and required fieldwork.
01Research in Context
What this study did
Cymbal et al. (2024) asked 43 working OBM practitioners what should be in a graduate OBM track. They used an online survey. The team wanted a shopping list of courses, skills, and fieldwork hours that new hires actually need.
What they found
Practitioners said every program must teach performance management, behavioral systems analysis, and behavior-change procedures. They also ranked soft skills at the top: clear writing, sharp problem solving, and smooth client rapport. Finally, they said real fieldwork is not optional—students must practice inside real organizations before they graduate.
How this fits with other research
King et al. (2020) gave early-career roadmaps that urged networking and vision statements. Cymbal et al. now fill in the curriculum details that make those roadmaps possible.
Gravina et al. (2024) tell new BCBAs to document systems-level wins on their résumés. The survey shows which courses give those wins in the first place—systems analysis and performance management top the list.
Critchfield (2015) demanded that schools prove their graduates actually perform well on the job. Cymbal et al. answer from the field: require fieldwork inside real companies so students graduate with proven job skills.
Why it matters
If you teach, supervise, or hire in OBM, use this list as your template. Add the three core courses, embed soft-skill drills in every class, and place students in company-based practicums. If you are a practitioner, share the paper with local universities and offer to host their fieldwork. Together we can close the gap between what schools teach and what employers need.

03Original abstract
Although content recommendations for a course in organizational behavior management (OBM) have been recently proposed, no formal suggestions for graduate training programs in OBM exist. Toward this end, we distributed a survey to solicit OBM practitioners' opinions on the most necessary coursework in OBM, the essential skills of OBM graduates, and the importance of fieldwork in OBM. Forty-three respondents completed the survey. Most respondents noted that OBM coursework should include classes in performance management, behavioral systems analysis, and behavior change procedures. Survey respondents also reported that essential skills in OBM include verbal and written communication, critical thinking and problem solving, and time management skills. All survey respondents suggested that fieldwork should be a component of OBM training. We discuss the results in terms of their implications for OBM graduate training programs.
