How Many Supervision CEUs Do BCBAs Actually Need

Every BCBA recertifies on a two-year cycle, and every cycle takes 32 CEUs. If you supervise anyone during that cycle (RBT fieldwork, BCaBA experience, or BCBA supervised fieldwork), 3 of those 32 have to be supervision CEUs. The part that trips people up is the arithmetic: those 3 hours come out of the 32, not on top of them.

BCBA continuing education requirements per 2-year recertification cycle, per the BACB.
Requirement Hours per 2-year cycle Counts toward the 32 total?
Ethics CEUs 4 Yes
Supervision CEUs (if you supervise) 3 Yes
General CEUs 25 (28 if you are not supervising) Yes
Total per cycle 32 n/a

If you are not supervising anyone this cycle, you do not owe the 3 supervision hours and your general requirement goes up to 28. Plenty of BCBAs take a few anyway. Supervision responsibilities have a way of landing on you mid-cycle, and it is much easier to have the hours banked than to go hunting for them with six weeks left.

Who this applies to: the requirement follows the activity, not the title. If you signed off on even one RBT's fieldwork hours this cycle, you are supervising. A clinical director who no longer signs off on anyone is not, however senior the role sounds. When your situation is genuinely unclear, the BACB certificant handbook is the authority on it, not a CEU catalog.

Supervision training and supervision CEUs are not the same thing

This is the mix-up we hear most often, and it costs people real money when they discover it late.

8-hour supervision training

A one-time credential step, completed before you begin supervising. It covers the BACB's supervision requirements and your responsibilities as a supervisor. You do it once and it does not repeat.

3 supervision CEUs per cycle

Ongoing continuing education, due every two-year recertification cycle for as long as you are supervising. The courses in this catalog are what satisfy it.

So if you completed the 8-hour training back when you first became eligible to supervise, that was step one. It does nothing for the 3 CEUs you owe this cycle.

Your 4 required ethics CEUs for BCBAs work on exactly the same logic (part of the 32, never in addition to it), and the remaining hours are general. If cost is the constraint, start with the free BCBA CEU directory, which pulls together every no-cost course in this catalog across all three credit types.

Browse All 43 Supervision CEU Courses

Every course here comes from an ACE-approved provider and is indexed for its supervision content. 36 of them carry BACB supervision credit; the badge on each card tells you the credit type, because a handful are supervision-adjacent sessions that land as general or ethics hours instead. 13 are free, 38 are on demand, and 5 are recorded conference sessions.

What effective BCBA supervision actually looks like

Research by Hajiaghamohseni et al. (2021) found that supervisors who use structured feedback, frequent contact, and competency-based evaluation produce trainees with significantly higher first-attempt BCBA exam pass rates. Supervision CEU courses that teach these skills make you a measurably better supervisor — not just a compliant one.

Look for courses covering: behavioral skills training formats, performance feedback delivery, data review with supervisees, and competency-based milestone tracking.

What Counts as a Supervision CEU

A supervision CEU is whatever the ACE provider designated as supervision credit. Topic alone does not decide it, and neither does your own read on how supervision-heavy the session felt. Look at the certificate. If it lists the hours as general credit, they are general hours, no matter how much of the hour was about supervising.

The content that usually carries the supervision designation sits in the BACB's personnel supervision and management territory:

✓ Structuring supervision and setting expectations
✓ Behavioral skills training with supervisees
✓ Delivering performance feedback that changes behavior
✓ RBT supervision requirements and documentation
✓ Competency-based evaluation of trainees
✓ Remote and hybrid supervision
✓ Supervisory ethics and boundaries
✓ Building supervision systems that scale past one supervisee

A quick gut check before you enroll: could you name one specific thing you would do differently with a supervisee on Monday morning? If not, you are probably looking at a general CEU with a supervision-flavored title.

How to Choose a Quality Supervision CEU Provider

You can satisfy this requirement with 3 hours of almost anything that carries the right credit type. Whether those 3 hours make you better at supervising is a completely separate question, and it comes down to who you pick. Here is the check worth running before you enroll anywhere new.

Verify ACE provider status

Only an Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) provider can issue BACB CEUs. Look any unfamiliar provider up in the BACB ACE Provider directory before you pay. Every course in the catalog above comes from a verified ACE provider, but check when you source hours elsewhere, especially from a conference or a vendor webinar.

Confirm it is designated supervision credit

Ask before you enroll, not after. A good provider states the credit type and hour count on the course page. If you cannot find it in writing anywhere, assume it is general credit and keep looking, because you cannot reclassify it yourself later.

Check that it teaches supervising, not just clinical content

The strongest supervision CEUs give you a procedure you can run with a supervisee this week. Supervision also sits inside the ethics code: the BACB Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts has a full section on your responsibilities to supervisees and trainees, and good supervision training connects back to it instead of treating ethics as somebody else's subject.

Confirm certificate delivery, then file it

An ACE provider issues a completion certificate showing your name, the course title, the credit hours and type, the date, and the provider. Drop every one into a single cloud folder the moment it lands. The BACB audits a sample of certificants each cycle, and rebuilding a two-year paper trail on a deadline is genuinely miserable.

Red flags: a provider you cannot find in the ACE directory, a course that will not state its credit type up front, a certificate that shows up without hours or a date on it, and anything that asks for payment to unlock a CEU advertised as free.

If you would rather choose by who is teaching, the organizations running the most supervision sessions in this catalog are The ABA Collective (7 sessions), RethinkBH (7 sessions), and Verbal Beginnings (6 sessions). Their sessions are scattered through the list above, and the filter chips make short work of finding them.

Worth knowing: nothing stops you from mixing sources. Take the 3 supervision hours wherever the teaching is best, fill the rest of your 32 from the free BCBA CEU catalog, and pick up your 4 ethics CEUs from whichever provider handles ethics well. The BACB never asks where the hours came from, only that the provider was ACE-approved and the credit type was right.

Common Questions About Supervision CEUs

BCBAs who are providing supervision must complete at least 3 supervision CEUs per 2-year certification cycle. These count toward your 32 total — not in addition to them.

The requirement applies to certificants who are actively providing supervision — whether supervising RBT experience, BCaBA experience, or BCBA-level experience. Review the current BACB certificant handbook for your specific situation.

Content in the BACB's personnel supervision and management territory: structuring supervision, behavioral skills training, delivering performance feedback, RBT supervision requirements, competency-based evaluation of trainees, supervision documentation, and supervisory ethics. Topic alone is not enough, though. The ACE provider has to designate the course as supervision credit for it to count.

Yes. Your 3 supervision CEUs are part of your 32 total, not extra. Breakdown: 4 ethics + 3 supervision + 25 general = 32.

Yes. The ABA Clubhouse (BBC's free Skool community) includes supervision CEU recordings at no cost. The BACB does not require supervision CEUs to be paid — free courses from ACE providers count identically.

Two separate things. The 8-hour BACB supervisor training is a one-time requirement to become an approved BCBA supervisor. Supervision CEUs are ongoing: 3 per 2-year cycle to maintain competence. If you completed the supervisor training when first eligible, that was a credential step — not your ongoing CEU requirement.

Yes. The BACB cares about the provider's ACE status and how the credit is designated, not about how the session reaches you. Of the 43 courses in this catalog, 38 are on-demand recordings you can start and finish tonight and 5 are recorded conference sessions.

If you provide supervision at any point during the cycle, plan on the 3 hours. The requirement attaches to supervising during the cycle, not to whether you happen to be supervising on the day you recertify. If your situation is genuinely borderline, check the BACB certificant handbook and take the hours anyway. Three CEUs is cheap insurance against a recertification problem.
