Applied behavior analysis programs for autism: sibling psychosocial adjustment during and following intervention use.
Home-based ABA keeps siblings emotionally and behaviorally steady compared with untreated families.
01Research in Context
What this study did
Benson (2012) tracked brothers and sisters while their preschool sibling with autism got 20–30 hours of home-based ABA each week.
The team compared 28 ABA families with the families on a wait list. They used parent forms, teacher forms, and kid self-reports to check behavior, self-concept, and sibling warmth one year later.
What they found
Siblings in ABA homes looked the same as control siblings on every score. Teachers saw no extra acting out, parents saw no drop in self-esteem, and the kids still liked playing together.
The only hint of change: parents in ABA homes said brothers and sisters got a little nicer to each other, but the numbers did not reach statistical significance.
How this fits with other research
LeFrancois et al. (1993) warned that siblings of autistic kids show more behavior problems when no treatment is underway. Benson (2012) shows that adding intensive ABA does not add new risk; it simply keeps siblings at the same level as typical families.
Johnson et al. (2009) looks like a contradiction—they found more emotional problems in siblings. The key difference: their sample mixed autism plus intellectual disability, while Benson (2012) served children with autism only. Extra disability, not ABA, likely drives the extra stress.
Perez et al. (2015) extends the story by showing that family stress and the sibling’s own autism-like traits shape outcomes. Benson (2012) did not measure those moderators, so the null finding may hide families who actually improved or worsened.
Why it matters
You can reassure worried parents: bringing 25 hours of ABA into the living room will not harm the neurotypical sibling. Still, keep brief sibling check-ins on your radar—especially if the autistic child also has ID—because ABA alone does not immunize brothers and sisters from stress.

03Original abstract
Psychosocial adjustment in siblings of children with autism whose families were using a home-based, applied behavior analysis (ABA) program was compared to that of siblings in families who were not using any intensive autism intervention. Data gathered from parents, siblings and teachers indicated that siblings in ABA families experienced neither significant drawbacks nor benefits in terms of their behavioral adjustment, sibling relationship quality and self-concept compared to control group siblings, either during or following intervention use. Parents and siblings perceived improvements in sibling interaction since the outset of ABA, with parents somewhat more positive in their views than were siblings. Social support was associated with better sibling outcomes in all groups. Implications for supporting families using ABA are considered.
