General CEU: Effective Communication for Caregiver Support

Effective communication with caregivers is the clinical skill that determines whether the behavioral science in a BCBA's treatment plan becomes a reality in a child's daily life. Even the most technically sophisticated behavior intervention plan will underperform if the caregiver who implements it at home does not understand its rationale, does not feel supported in implementing it, and does not have the confidence to sustain it through the inevitable challenges of real-world application.

Course Description

Effective communication with caregivers is a critical yet underdeveloped skill in behavior analytic practice; and can be of the biggest barriers to successful collaboration. While research supports the use of compassionate, collaborative approaches to increase caregiver adherence and improve outcomes, many practitioners still struggle with how to implement this in real-world settings. This practical, hands-on CEU event will focus on strengthening the dialogue between practitioners and caregivers. Participants will learn how to initiate and maintain collaborative conversations, use strategic questioning to invite caregiver input, and co-create visual tools that support mutual understanding and follow-through. Through guided examples and opportunities to create personalized supports, attendees will walk away with tools they can immediately use to enhance caregiver communication to better support the families and clients they serve.

What You'll Learn

  1. Identify strategies to encourage dialogue between caregivers and practitioners,.
  2. Identify questions that drive collaboration in caregiver support.
  3. Create their own visual supports and tools for collaborative communication.
