Course Description

Given the consistent demonstration of poor adult outcomes for individuals with autism spectrum and related disorders, it is clear that significant changes when it comes to planning for the transition to adulthood are needed. With time-limited resources and entitlement services available in childhood, it is critical that goals written, and interventions prescribed prior to adulthood are meaningful to effectively prepare each individual for the rest of their life. This presentation will review how practitioners can affect outcomes by adhering to three best practice guidelines, including intentionally choosing what skills to teach, how to teach these skills, and long-term planning.

What You'll Learn

  1. Describe best practice guidelines for selecting meaningful transition goals for individuals with autism and related disorders.
  2. Identify instructional strategies that effectively prepare individuals with developmental disabilities for adult life outcomes.
  3. Explain the importance of long-term planning and socially valid goal-setting in improving post-transition outcomes.
