Neurodivergent brains work differently and therefore need different stimulation and regulation to move throughout the world. Oftentimes, ADHD symptoms can lead to social problems or may manifest as social skills deficits themselves. For example, because ADHD relies heavily on interest-based, it may be challenging for those with ADHD to demonstrate interest in social settings that are not relevant in their eyes. That can lead to decreased focus, attention, and behavior excess among other issues, and in turn, can alienate peers. Conversely, in a setting that is highly interesting, these issues may abate themselves, and lead to mixed messages for parents and professionals alike. Do they have the skills and choose not to show them, or is there something larger at play? This workshop will dive into these questions and help practitioners make sense of seemingly irregular patterns. We will discuss strategies to support the development of meaningful social interactions and improved outcomes for the client in particular.
