In this session, clinical psychologist Dr. Debbie Sorensen explores burnout through a contextual-behavioral lens, integrating principles from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and behavior analysis. Participants will learn how burnout develops as a function of reinforcement history, rule-governed behavior, and competing contingencies in professional settings. The talk highlights how environmental and cultural factors, such as workload, lack of control, and values conflict, establish conditions that evoke exhaustion and disengagement. Through a behavioral interpretation of the "burnout cycle," attendees will identify measurable indicators of stress, analyze their own patterns of behavior that maintain burnout, and practice evidence-based strategies such as self-monitoring, stimulus control, and differential reinforcement to restore balance and sustained engagement. This session empowers behavior analysts to model self-care and resilience using the same science they apply to help others.
