Training behavior analysts to conduct functional analyses using a remote group behavioral skills training package
Remote group BST hands every BCBA a safe, mastery-level ticket to run functional analyses without leaving home.
01Research in Context
What this study did
Lloveras et al. (2022) taught 13 behavior analysts to run full functional analyses over Zoom. The trainers used a group behavioral skills training package: short lecture, model video, live role-play, and instant feedback.
Each analyst practiced with the trainer and peers until they hit mastery. The team later watched each analyst run a real FA to count any errors.
What they found
Every single BCBA reached mastery after the remote sessions. When they ran FAs on their own caseloads, almost no mistakes showed up.
The results say a Zoom room can replace a full day in a clinic lab for learning this tough skill.
How this fits with other research
Piazza et al. (2025) used the same remote group BST to teach ethical-scenario drills and also got 100% mastery. The two studies line up like Lego blocks: same training frame, new content plugged in.
Schnell et al. (2018) gave one-day computer modules and boosted FA decision scores. Lloveras adds live role-play and group feedback, showing the newer package can still push skills higher.
Colombo et al. (2021) surveyed the field and found most BCBAs get almost no FA training. Lloveras answers that gap with a ready-to-mail solution.
Why it matters
If you supervise staff who have never run an FA, you no longer need to fly them to a workshop or clear a clinic day. Schedule three Zoom meetings, use the Lloveras script, and watch each learner hit mastery. The model is cheap, fast, and COVID-proof, so you can start next week even if your team is scattered across counties.

03Original abstract
Behavioral skills training (BST) is a well-established procedure used to train individuals how to perform a variety of complex skills. Previous research has used BST to train parents, teachers, and clinicians how to conduct a variety of clinical procedures, including functional analysis of problem behavior. Although this procedure has been demonstrated to be very effective, it can be time consuming and resource intensive. In the present study, 13 behavior analysts were trained to conduct functional analyses of problem behavior. All participants were employees of a multistate early intervention clinic. This staff training was conducted fully remotely, and trainers acted as child role-play partners. Participants experienced baseline, an instruction/discussion component, a post-instruction probe, group BST, and a post-BST probe. For 5 participants, in-situ probes were also conducted. All participants achieved mastery and in-situ errors were low.
