Supervision CEU: Too Close for Comfort? Balancing Mentorship and Friendship in Supervision

Jamie Redding's presentation addresses one of the most practically challenging dimensions of BCBA supervisory practice: the fact that the supervisory relationship is simultaneously a professional evaluation relationship, a mentorship relationship, and — especially in settings where supervisors and supervisees share professional communities, workplaces, or social networks — often a relationship with meaningful personal dimensions as well. The BACB Ethics Code's guidance on avoiding dual relationships is clear in principle and complicated in practice.

Course Description

The BACB Professional and Ethical Compliance Code emphasizes the importance of avoiding dual relationships to protect the integrity of services and maintain professional boundaries. Yet, in practice, behavior analysts often find themselves navigating overlapping roles—particularly as supervisors, mentors, and friends to those they support. This presentation will focus on the challenges and ethical considerations inherent in these common dual relationships. We'll begin by examining the ethical guidelines surrounding supervisory relationships and how mentorship and friendship may intersect with these responsibilities. Through real-world examples, we'll explore how these dynamics can evolve—sometimes gradually and unintentionally—and how this overlap can impact objectivity, feedback, and the power differential inherent in supervision. Participants will be invited to question whether strict avoidance of personal connection is always realistic or culturally appropriate. In many communities, particularly smaller or culturally interconnected ones, could social closeness foster trust and open communication rather than compromise it? Finally, the session will guide participants in developing practical approaches to managing these overlapping roles effectively. By fostering self-awareness and reflective practice, attendees will be better prepared to maintain ethical integrity while respecting cultural contexts. The goal is to equip supervisors with the tools and perspectives needed to navigate these complex dynamics confidently and ethically.
