General CEU: **The Best Practices in Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention at the Lovaas Institute Midwest

The Best Practices in Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention at the Lovaas Institute Midwest is the kind of topic that looks straightforward until it collides with the speed, ambiguity, and competing demands of home routines and caregiver-led implementation, clinic sessions and day-to-day service delivery. In The Best Practices in Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention at the Lovaas Institute Midwest, for this course, the practical stakes show up in stronger conceptual consistency and better translational decision making, not in abstract discussion alone.

Course Description

O. Ivar Lovaas founded the UCLA Young Autism Project in 1970 in order to move ABA services out of the institutions and into the homes of families with very young children. As a scientific treatment, the goals, methods, and services would constantly evolve in response to the analysis of the behavioral data which was found. It is clear that many stakeholders have a very weak understanding of the nature of the Lovaas model, often because of preconceptions gained many years ago. This presentation will give an overview of the current clinical treatment goals and methods of the Lovaas Institute Midwest model. The current Direct Service standards will be presented, along with the multi-modal evaluation system used to maintain accountability to the families. These standards will include the focus on meaningful treatment planning with full parent engagement, parent training to empower the parents, individualization, genuine mastery of sustainable treatment goals, naturalization, and transition to desired community services. Specific clinical goals and methods include positive reinforcement technology, play skills, matrix training, advanced language comprehension, self-control of challenging behavior, and school transition programming. The dynamic programming system of staff training and maintenance will also be presented. Please contact Paula Pompa-Craven at Paula.Pompa-Craven@essc.org should you have any APA questions or concerns!
