Course Description

Women at Work: Strengthening Interpersonal Skills to Manage Difficult Situations Jamie Hughes-Lika and Karen Hans Working in the field of behavior analysis has transitioned over the years from a boy's club to a female-dominated industry. While this change is apparent, it can still be difficult for women to navigate our networks at work and deliver tough messages. These messages can include anything from negotiating a fair wage, giving feedback to a colleague, or disagreeing with a clinical treatment team. The ability to have meaningful conversations with others, without losing the intent of the message, and with grace and ease can be one of the most challenging soft skills to master. We know that successful interactions with others require well-developed interpersonal skills, but without a framework, these soft skills are not implemented consistently. During this presentation, the presenters will go over how to identify the intent behind the conversations, the ability to find shared meaning with those they are speaking with, and navigating between the facts of the situation and their interpretations of the situation. This will help participants understand how to practice having these tough conversations and give them a framework to follow. Women Mentoring Women: A Call for Mentorship Throughout Their Career Lifespan Kristin Korinko, Michelle Ammon, and Christy Smiley According to the most recent literature, there appears to be a gap in mentorship in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). The gap appears to widen when searching for mentorship among professional women within our field. Due to current demographic statistics that reveal over 85% of the BACB certificants identify as "Female" this presentation is a call to action (BACB, 2023). It should also be noted that the perspectives of women tend to shift as we encounter certain developmental milestones along our career path. This presentation will be provided by three (3) women who are at different points in their careers. We will present points of view and discussion prompts as they relate to current literature from the "novice" to the "seasoned." Key takeaways will include the benefits of mentorship, identification of her own developmental career path, and strategic planning for effective behavior change.
