General CEU: A Behavior Analyst's Guide to Working with Linguistically Diverse Learners and Their Families: An Exploration of Current Trends, Resources, and Best Practice

A Behavior Analyst's Guide to Working with Linguistically Diverse Learners and Their Families: An Exploration of Current Trends, Resources, and Best Practice becomes clinically important the moment a team has to turn good intentions into reliable action inside home routines, treatment sessions, interdisciplinary consultation, and health-related skill support. In A Behavior Analyst's Guide to Working with Linguistically Diverse Learners and Their Families: An Exploration of Current Trends, Resources, and Best Practice, for this course, the practical stakes show up in safe, humane intervention that respects health variables and daily-life feasibility, not in abstract discussion alone.

Course Description

As the U.S. population becomes more diverse, behavioral health providers are now working with more culturally and linguistically diverse clients than ever before (Frey, 2019; Vespa et al., 2018). Culture can significantly impact the healthcare an individual receives due to individual provider biases and systemic discrimination (Constantino et al., 2020). Decades of misinformation and discriminatory practices along with a lack of cultural and linguistic diversity in the field of behavior analysis have led to further marginalization of multilingual learners and their families. While some scholars have started to explore the practice of cultural responsiveness in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), providers often lack practical guidelines and strategies for engaging in clinical work with multilingual learners (Wang et al., 2019). This session will provide participants with historical context for working with multilingual learners and their families in the United States. Additionally, presenters will outline specific guidelines and strategies for behavior analysts working with culturally and linguistically diverse families and learners.

What You'll Learn

  1. Identify relevant contexts and trends for multilingual learners in the United States.
  2. Identify and discuss specific, evidence-based strategies for working with linguistically diverse families and learners in ABA.
  3. Describe possible barriers limiting multilingual learners' access to ABA services and how to help families navigate them.
