Burnout in behavior analytic settings is not a peripheral concern or a sign of individual weakness. Research by Bottini and colleagues, Slowiak and DeLongchamp, and Slowiak and Jay has documented consistently high rates of burnout among BCBAs and other behavior analysts across clinic, school, and home-based settings.

Join Free →Burnout is highly prevalent in behavior analytic settings (Bottini et al., 2020; Slowiak & DeLongchamp, 2022; Slowiak & Jay, 2023). Beyond documenting this issue and negative associated outcomes, there is a dearth of research evaluating empirically based actions behavior analysts may take to mitigate burnout. This symposium will present emerging areas of research that are relevant to mitigating burnout within behavior analytic settings. The first presentation will discuss tools to assess burnout towards developing intervention, including an overview of the development and validation of the Burnout Assessment for Developmental Disability Settings (BADDS). The second presentation will discuss promising organizational strategies for addressing burnout after burnout has been thoroughly assessed from a behavior analytic framework. Our discussant will conclude the symposium with a discussion of broader implications for assessment and treatment that these data presentations offer.

Summer Bottini, PhD, BCBA-D, received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Binghamton University and completed post-doctoral residencies at the Marcus Autism Center and May Institute. Dr. Bottini is an Assistant Professor in the Emory University School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics and a Psychologist in the Severe Behavior Program at Marcus Autism Center. She has over a decade of experience providing clinical services to children with developmental disabilities and she specializes in the assessment and treatment of externalizing behavior. Her research is focused on the effective supervision of clinicians to provide optimal care for autistic and neurodivergent individuals, with a particular interest in addressing staff burnout. Within the realm of burnout, Dr. Bottini’s work focuses on how burnout may be re-conceptualized within a behavior analytic framework focused on workplace stimuli and provider behavior. She has also developed a measure of identifying workplace variables that evoke provider burnout-related behavior, which will inform data-driven modular interventions for preventing and addressing burnout within an organization.
