Implementation of Video Feedback Within a Community Based Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Intervention Program for Toddlers With ASD: Pilot Study.
Video feedback slips easily into community NDBI and keeps parent coaching on track.

What this study did
Klein et al. (2021) tested video feedback inside a community NDBI program for toddlers with autism.
Half the families got normal NDBI coaching. The other half got the same coaching plus short clips of themselves playing with their child.
Staff watched the clips with parents and pointed out what worked. The trial ran for six months.
What they found
Both groups improved the same amount. Kids gained language and play skills. Parents felt just as confident.
Adding video feedback did not slow the program. Families said the clips were helpful and easy to use.
How this fits with other research
Aiello et al. (2022) also added video feedback to parent coaching, but used telehealth during COVID. They saw higher parent compliance than live-stream classes. Klein’s clinic trial now shows the same boost can happen face-to-face.
Gevarter et al. (2025) pushed the idea further. They coached bilingual Hispanic families in coached NDBI and saw very-large communication gains. Klein’s pilot opened the door by proving video feedback is feasible in real-world clinics.
Klusek et al. (2022) ran a large community NDBI without video. Their toddlers also improved, but Klein’s RCT tells us the extra video step does not hurt and may help staff explain skills faster.

You can add video feedback to your NDBI parent sessions tomorrow. Five-minute clips and a pause button let parents see their own success. No extra travel, no drop in gains. Start with one family, ask them to record a play routine on a phone, and review the best moments together.

03Original abstract
Video feedback (VF) is an intervention delivery technique that complements naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions (NDBI) and parent-mediated interventions (PMI) by using caregiver-child interaction videos reviewed with a clinician to facilitate behavioral change in caregivers. Although VF has been implemented in PMI with young children with ASD, examinations of feasibility and acceptability, as well as the potential effectiveness of VF in community settings, have been limited. In this pilot randomized control trial (NCT03397719; https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03397719), families were randomized into a state-funded Early Intervention (EI) NDBI program or the NDBI program augmented with VF. Results demonstrated high levels of implementation and acceptability of VF augmenting the community-based EI program in caregivers and clinicians. Both groups showed significant improvements after 6 months in social communication symptoms and some areas of developmental and adaptive skills.
