Supervision CEU: Turning Conflict Into Collaboration: Building Stronger Relationships Through Communication

Workplace conflict in ABA settings is not rare or exceptional — it is a structural inevitability of clinical organizations that serve clients with complex behavioral needs, employ large teams with diverse communication styles and professional backgrounds, and operate under significant resource constraints and performance pressure. Maegan Howell's course on turning conflict into collaboration reframes the question from whether conflict will occur to how practitioners navigate it when it does, with outcomes that strengthen rather than damage the working relationships on which clinical quality depends.

Course Description

Maegan Howell, M.A., LMHC, BCBA will be presenting on how to respond to conflict in the workplace in a way that results in stronger team relationships. Conflict in the professional setting can lead to reduced morale, negative health effects for team members, loss of productivity and profits, and ultimately turnover. Researchers estimate that 85% of employees experience workplace conflict and spend approximately three hours each week dealing with conflict. This results in an estimated impact of $359 billion annually in the U.S. However, conflict doesn't have to result in productivity loss, a drop in your team culture, or people leaving your organization. When managed intentionally and effectively, conflict can lead to growth and stronger team relationships. By the end of this presentation, attendees will be equipped to identify precursors to conflict, implement effective communication and responses when conflict does occur, and rebuild trust once conflict has been resolved.

What You'll Learn

  1. Identify common sources and dynamics of conflict in the professional setting.
  2. Explain and employ effective communication techniques to turn conflict into collaboration.
  3. Implement strategies for rebuilding trust and relationships after a conflict is resolved.
