The Pyramid Approach to Education matters because it changes what a BCBA notices when decisions have to hold up in case conceptualization, intervention design, staff training, and literature-informed problem solving. In The Pyramid Approach to Education, for this course, the practical stakes show up in stronger conceptual consistency and better translational decision making, not in abstract discussion alone.

Through lecture, video example, discussion, and activities, participants will understand the rationale for implementing each of the nine elements of the Pyramid Approach as well as how to apply the information in a myriad of settings. The "why" of learning and the "how" of teaching are described using the three dimensional shape of the pyramid, which symbolizes an integrated and interactive framework for teaching. This presentation will guide professionals, parents, caretakers, and teams in designing an effective program. Participants will leave this workshop with many new tools to add to their "teaching toolkit" and empowered with the knowledge of how to apply them.

Dr. Anthony Castrogiovanni began his career over 40 years ago advocating for and providing services to children and adults who were being discharged from The Willowbrook State Developmental Center in New York. He developed one of the first token economy-based agencies in New York as well as developing a teaching curriculum for adults re-entering the community. He has since specialized in the treatment of severe problem behavior, and Autism Spectrum disorder as it impacts behavior and education and has developed both site-based and in-home programs for children and adults with autism as well as Prader-Willi Syndrome. He has taught at SUNY at Stony Brook and has published in peer reviewed journals such as the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior and Research in Developmental Disabilities. An experienced presenter, Dr. Castrogiovanni has spoken at numerous conferences both to train educational staff as well as presenting original research to professional audiences. He has conceived, developed, and directed two national programs that served children and adults in an innovative manner that produced dramatically better outcomes for the participants. Prior to working with Pyramid, he was the Director for the Bancroft Center for Autism Research and Educational Services. He had been a member of the Monitoring and Review Board for the Delaware Autistic Program for several years as well, working closely with Dr. Bondy. Dr. Castrogiovanni has been providing private consultation to families, schools, agencies, and businesses independently since 1977. His entrepreneurial spirit and business background bring a unique perspective and understanding to program development that allows the development of outstanding clinical and educational procedures that make sense for the individual as well as the larger environment in which the program takes place in.
