The Kids are Alright: Relational Frame Theory and Implicit Racial Bias matters because it changes what a BCBA notices when decisions have to hold up in adult services and community participation. In The Kids are Alright: Relational Frame Theory and Implicit Racial Bias, for this course, the practical stakes show up in clearer case conceptualization, better instructional targets, and stronger generalization, not in abstract discussion alone.

In a self-paced longitudinal study, participants were exposed to a six-part training sequence (modified from Devine, et al., 2012). Though it was hypothesized that children would show the most significant reduction in bias scores followed by adults, results demonstrated that adults actually increased in bias scores while children maintained their baseline levels. This study also implemented a novel approach to the IRAP assessment, utilizing the addition of control stimuli to measure changes in response due to training or due to practice effects. This novel approach demonstrated that responses to control stimuli remained constant while responses to experimental stimuli changed, indicating that the trainings had the most effect upon responses and not practice effects. Results raised questions of social awareness related to anonymous responding as well as increased concern in biased responding across children and adults.
