Join Free →"What I Wish You Knew: A BCBA, a Mother, and the Power of Compassionate Care" Compassionate care is an essential, yet underemphasized component of effective Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) service delivery. While practitioners are well-trained in behavioral interventions, the emotional needs of parents often receive less attention, despite their critical role in treatment outcomes (Rohrer et al.,2020). Families of children with developmental disabilities, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Down syndrome, frequently experience elevated levels of stress, anxiety, and burnout. Navigating these challenges—along with medical complexities, educational systems, and social isolation—can negatively impact parents' mental health, affecting their ability to engage fully in the therapeutic process (Hockman, 2023). This beginner to intermediate-level presentation will focus on the practical application of compassionate care in ABA, with an emphasis on fostering meaningful connections between behavior analysts and parents (Taylor et al, 2018). Attendees will explore strategies to recognize and respond to signs of caregiver fatigue (Smith & Grzywacz, 2014) provide emotional support, and create collaborative environments that empower parents. Real-life examples will demonstrate how compassion enhances engagement, strengthens parent-analyst relationships, and ultimately leads to better treatment outcomes for children. By the end of the presentation, participants will leave with actionable tools to incorporate compassion into everyday practice, balancing evidence-based interventions with empathy Gatzunis et al, 2023). This session reinforces the importance of ethical, family-centered ABA services by highlighting how addressing parental well-being is integral to the success of treatment. Compassionate parent care not only improves outcomes for children but ensures that families feel understood, supported, and valued throughout their ABA journey. Shouldn't Compassion Have Been the Standard All Along? As behavior analysts, we pride ourselves on evidence-based practices—but where has compassion fit in all this time? Why are terms like "trauma-informed," "neurodiversity-affirming," and "compassionate care" gaining so much traction now, when many of us assumed they were always part of the job? This presentation challenges attendees to explore the historical and cultural forces that made compassion feel like an afterthought in applied behavior analysis. We'll examine how past practices—centered on compliance, normalization, and control—have contributed to harm and mistrust, especially among autistic and disabled communities. Instead of riding the wave of buzzwords, we'll unpack what it really means to embed compassion into our values, systems, and services. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the ethical responsibility to honor lived experience, center autonomy, and reject practices that ignore the humanity of those we serve. Participants will understand the goal is not to rebrand ABA, instead the goal is to remember why we chose this field in the first place.
