Course Description

All behavior analysis practitioners work with families from diverse backgrounds; however, training programs may not adequately prepare students to work with culturally and linguistically diverse learners. Additionally, navigating the language of instruction for linguistically diverse learners with disabilities often involves confronting pervasive myths and misconceptions. This presentation will explore these issues. First, prevalent myths and misconceptions surrounding the language of instruction for linguistically diverse learners will be reviewed. Audience members will gain insights into how these beliefs can impact learning outcomes and hinder effective practices. Drawing from research in behavior analysis, three key areas will be explored to highlight the tangible impacts of language of instruction on linguistically diverse learners. The presenter will emphasize the critical role of collaborative interdisciplinary practices to help support these learners and conclude with recommendations for future research and practice in this critical area.
