General CEU: Recent Advancements in Assessment and Intervention for Challenging Behavior

Recent Advancements in Assessment and Intervention for Challenging Behavior is the kind of topic that looks straightforward until it collides with the speed, ambiguity, and competing demands of case conceptualization, intervention design, staff training, and literature-informed problem solving. In Recent Advancements in Assessment and Intervention for Challenging Behavior, for this course, the practical stakes show up in stronger conceptual consistency and better translational decision making, not in abstract discussion alone.

Course Description

This symposium explores two novel adaptations to functional analysis methodology and concludes with a discussant. The first presentation introduces a component functional analysis designed to detect both independent and synthesized functions of challenging behavior by systematically evaluating individual establishing operations and consequences. Results to date indicate that the component functional analysis can identify independent and synthesized functions with a high level of sensitivity and specificity. The second presentation examines how exposure to intervention may influence the results of a trial-based functional analysis that records and reinforces appropriate and challenging behavior. Results suggest that the intervention may yield improvements in bias and severity but exert minimal effect on sensitivity to different forms of reinforcement. Together, these studies offer implications for improving both precision of function identification and evaluation of treatment effectiveness.

What You'll Learn

  1. Compare component functional analysis methodology with traditional functional analysis in detecting independent and synthesized functions of challenging behavior.
  2. Evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of component functional analysis for identifying multiple behavioral functions.
  3. Analyze how exposure to intervention influences the results of trial-based functional analysis for both appropriate and challenging behavior.
