Ethics CEU: Quality FBAs in Schools: Practical Steps for Understanding and Supporting Student Behaviors

Functional Behavior Assessment is the cornerstone of effective behavior support in schools, yet its implementation quality varies dramatically across educational settings. When conducted well, an FBA illuminates the environmental variables maintaining a student's challenging behavior and provides the foundation for interventions that teach the student what to do rather than merely suppressing what they are doing wrong.

Course Description

This training provides school staff with practical, step-by-step guidance on how to conduct effective Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) within the school setting. Participants will learn how to identify and define challenging behaviors, collect and analyze data, determine the function of behavior, and use that information to create meaningful, skill-based interventions. The session also emphasizes collaboration, ethical practices, and how to use FBA findings to build Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) that teach students what to do, not just what to stop doing.

What You'll Learn

  1. Explain the Definition of Functional Behavior Assessments.
  2. Describe the essential components of a school-based Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), including interviews, direct observation, data collection, and hypothesis development.
  3. Apply ethical and collaborative practices to design Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) that focus on teaching replacement behaviors and supporting student success in the school setting.
