Prosocial in the Workplace: Building Better Groups Through the Intersection of Contextual Behavioral Science, Economics, and Evolutionary Theory is the kind of topic that looks straightforward until it collides with the speed, ambiguity, and competing demands of joint consultation, shared care planning, school-team communication, and interdisciplinary handoffs. In Prosocial in the Workplace: Building Better Groups Through the Intersection of Contextual Behavioral Science, Economics, and Evolutionary Theory, for this course, the practical stakes show up in clearer roles, fewer duplicated efforts, and better coordinated intervention, not in abstract discussion alone.

Prosocial (Wilson, Atkins, & Hayes, 2019) offers a science-based framework for improving cooperation and performance at multiple levels—clients, employees, and organizations—by integrating principles of contextual behavioral science, Elinor Ostrom's Core Design Principles (CDPs), and evolutionary theory. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the three lines of empirical research comprising Prosocial, and explore how BCBAs can apply Prosocial to enhance outcomes across contexts and settings. Attendees will differentiate between within-group and between-group selection and their effects on cooperation and competition. Through a combination of conceptual discussion, case examples, and interactive exercises, this session will provide behavior analysts with practical tools to foster more effective teams, support sustainable behavior change, and enhance group well-being. They will learn to operationally define Ostrom's eight elements of effective groups and assess group functioning using the CDPs. Additionally, participants will identify committed actions, barriers, and solutions for applying these principles in their work. The presentation will also examine psychological flexibility at both individual and group levels and discuss tangible workplace benefits of Prosocial processes.
