General CEU: Personalized Approaches to Enhancing Academic and Behavioral Success: Case Studies in Special Education

Personalized Approaches to Enhancing Academic and Behavioral Success: Case Studies in Special Education is the kind of topic that looks straightforward until it collides with the speed, ambiguity, and competing demands of clinic sessions and day-to-day service delivery. In Personalized Approaches to Enhancing Academic and Behavioral Success: Case Studies in Special Education, for this course, the practical stakes show up in feasible school-based support, stronger collaboration, and better student participation, not in abstract discussion alone.

Course Description

This symposium presents three case studies on individualized strategies to enhance academic engagement and behavioral outcomes for students with special education needs. The first presentation explores the use of response shaping and reinforcement to improve a student's engagement with age-appropriate literary texts, culminating in success on state English Language Arts assessments. The second study examines a treatment package combining antecedent interventions and reinforcement of alternative behaviors to support elementary students' readiness for less restrictive environments, resulting in reduced challenging behaviors and increased academic participation. The final case study highlights how integrating behavioral and academic strategies helped students with intellectual disabilities and severe challenging behaviors, leading to greater time on task, completion of complex assignments, and improved academic performance. The symposium concludes with words from our discussant, emphasizing the value of personalized, data-driven approaches that balance behavioral and academic strategies, promoting student success and facilitating transitions to less restrictive educational settings.
