Supervision CEU: Perceived Supervision and Support of Behavior Technicians: The Good, Bad, and Ugly

Behavior technicians are the direct-service backbone of applied behavior analysis. With over 187,000 RBTs registered as of 2024, they represent the largest credentialed workforce in the field, and yet they often enter clinical settings with minimal preparation, inconsistent onboarding, and highly variable supervision quality.

Course Description

As of 2024, there are 187,034 registered behavior technicians (RBTs; BACB, 2024). These staff serve as our front-line workers in various settings, working with various topographies of behavior, sometimes with little training beforehand (e.g., Ralston & Brown, 2023). With high work demands and the potential for stressful work conditions, behavior technicians are especially vulnerable to increased stress and burnout. Previous research has indicated that perceived supervisor support and clinical supervision may decrease the likelihood of burnout by buffering the negative aspects of day-to-day job responsibilities. Additionally, regular and quality supervision may have a positive impact on behavior technicians and treatment outcomes (e.g., Gibson et al., 2009). This presentation will review preliminary survey results of behavior technicians working in service delivery with an analysis on decreasing the likelihood of burnout, and current trends in support and supervision, and best practices for clinical supervision.

What You'll Learn

  1. Identify common symptoms of burnout, including exhaustion, feelings of cynicism, and detachment from the job and behaviors associated with burnout.
  2. Identify BACB ethical codes and best practices for BCBAs providing supervision.
  3. Identify "contingencies of trust" (i.e., soft skills) needed to develop trust and enhance perceived support to further prevent burnout.
