General CEU: Parent Training Guide: Preventing and Responding to Behaviours

Parent Training Guide: Preventing and Responding to Behaviours belongs in serious BCBA study because it shapes whether behavior-analytic decisions stay useful once they leave a clean training example and enter caregiver coaching, home routines, team meetings, and values-sensitive decision making. In Preventing and Responding to Behaviours, for this course, the practical stakes show up in better alignment between intervention and the family context in which it must survive, not in abstract discussion alone.

Course Description

Welcome to our Parent Training Guide, in this course we are focusing on challenging behaviour, and Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) strategies. We are Behaviour Analysts who are committed to making behaviour science accessible and understandable. In this session, we will explain the difference between preventing behaviours, and responding to behaviours. We will provide an introduction to Positive Behaviour Support (PBS). PBS is currently used widely in the UK within Adult Social Care settings, however, as a field and practice it is applicable to a range of settings and circumstances; including residential care, educational settings and parenting. We will explain the rationale behind the different types of strategies used in PBS - Proactive, Active, Reactive and Recovery. We will explain and explore each of these components, give a rationale for each, and provide examples of what behaviour change strategies could fit into each area. Proactive strategies are for preventing behaviours that challenge, and reactive strategies are for responding to behaviours that challenge. We will discuss who can benefit from Positive Behaviour Support, and what qualifications are required to become a practitioner in this field. Additionally, we will consider how to record behaviours to develop a stronger understanding of their functions, and discuss what behavioural functions are. Audience: Parents with no prior understanding of PBSParents who have an ABA home program in place, or PBS input from a professionalProfessionals working in roles with adults or young people who display challenging behaviours Anyone interested in an overview of the main components of PBS!
