Course Description

Behavior analysts love the idea of disseminating behavior analysis, but what does that mean in practice? This paper explores the six-year-long history of the Behavioral Performance Coaching (BPC) program operated through the School of Behavior Analysis in collaboration with Esports and Athletics at Florida Institute of Technology. One Master's student began the BPC program in search of an alternative supervised fieldwork experience beyond the well-established areas of practice in medical and educational ABA. They then continued to build the BPC program through their doctoral experience, into what it is today. The BPC program is currently a formally recognized fieldwork site by the School of Behavior Analysis at Florida Tech, including faculty support and supervision, case management of five different esports by doctoral student BCBAs, and up to a dozen Master's students at any given time. To reach this point, we had to learn how to: 1) identify and define the area we wanted to disseminate into, 2) make a meaningful connection with those already operating in that area, 3) address differences in skills between behavior analysis and the area we were disseminating into, 4) identify the amount of resources required to start and maintain an operation, 5) develop processes and procedures specific to the area we were disseminating into, and 6) showcase our value and growth. Each of these steps required us to build out the organization to integrate the BCBA test content outline, as well as ethical, competency, and supervisory concerns. We identified and addressed areas in which students can engage in behavior analytic activities that satisfy and exemplify the BCBA test content outline and the seven dimensions of ABA. We also had to compare, contrast, and manage differences in the ethics codes and legal conduct associated with the area being disseminated into. Lastly, we had to articulate and navigate differences and limitations in ensuring student competency through fieldwork supervision and literature review when disseminating into this new area. Successful dissemination is about doing work that creates valuable outcomes and establishes motivation in others to learn about and incorporate behavior analysis and science-based practice. BPC has routinely done this in overcoming and growing through the COVID-19 pandemic, three different esports directors, building changes, and rotations in staff, coaches, and players. Rather than individual contracts and projects, which can be common in OBM, we've developed as an organization and touched every area of practice, including research, performance management, behavior systems analysis, project management, performance-based pay, and behavior-based safety.
