Supervision CEU: Leaning in & Lifting as WE Climb: Mentorship and Supervision in Behavior Analysis

Ashley Carrigan's session addresses a structural challenge in behavior analysis that directly affects workforce quality: the pipeline from newly certified behavior analyst to competent independent practitioner is not smooth, and the supervisory and mentorship relationships that are supposed to smooth it are inconsistent in both quality and availability. New BCBAs often report feeling underprepared for the full scope of their role despite having completed the required supervised hours, and the research literature on burnout, imposter syndrome, and turnover in behavior analysis reflects this gap.

Course Description

Effective mentorship and supervision will be critical to the growth and competency of behavior analysts. This session will highlight the key roles of mentors and supervisors in supporting upcoming and newly certified behavior analysts, focusing on building a culture of mutual support and shared advancement. Research indicates that supportive mentorship enhances job satisfaction, retention, and professional growth in behavior analysts (Smith et al., 2019; Brodhead & Quigley, 2022). The need for evidence-based supervision practices will be crucial, particularly in addressing high turnover and promoting cultural responsiveness (Li & Poling, 2021; Deochand et al., 2023). This session will cover the essentials of mentorship, practical supervision strategies, and ethical guidelines from the BACB. Participants will engage in case studies, discussions, and exercises to apply these concepts in practice. By "lifting as we climb," behavior analysts will create a supportive environment that enhances professional competence and promotes long-term career success.
