Leadership in ABA organizations is often treated as a personality trait — something a person either has or does not have — rather than as a set of learned, observable behaviors shaped by contingencies and subject to the same scientific analysis as any other behavioral domain. This framing creates a practical problem: if leadership is a trait, it cannot be systematically developed, and leaders who struggle cannot be helped through anything more precise than generic encouragement.

For ABA practitioners to help others, they need an effective organization to work for...one that brings people together in pursuit of a common goal. Delivering effective ABA services is very difficult and starting and growing a business where people do high quality work is perhaps even more challenging. Succeeding in this area requires many factors to align, and leaders inside the business play a key role in making this happen. Developing leaders is difficult, and the fact that few models of behavioral leadership exist to guide our efforts. Dr. Austin will discuss the model of behavioral leadership he has developed as a result of coaching hundreds of leaders inside and outside of ABA over the past 30 years. Participants will leave with some actionable ideas of what they can do to improve their own leadership behaviors, and those of others they serve in their organization.
