General CEU: Invited Speaker: #ItsNotBinary - Avoiding Black & White Attitudes in Practice & Life

Invited Speaker: #ItsNotBinary - Avoiding Black & White Attitudes in Practice & Life is the kind of topic that looks straightforward until it collides with the speed, ambiguity, and competing demands of case conceptualization, intervention design, staff training, and literature-informed problem solving. In Avoiding Black & White Attitudes in Practice & Life, for this course, the practical stakes show up in stronger conceptual consistency and better translational decision making, not in abstract discussion alone.

Course Description

In a world that feels increasingly binary, it is important to avoid such thinking when making treatment decisions. Sorting into black and white categories is emotionally comforting. Uncertainty is anxiety provoking. So making decisions that are either Yes or No feels more certain than Yes AND or No AND. There are great benefits to understanding the tendencies and resisting the impulse to overly categorize.

What You'll Learn

  1. Identify multiple examples of binary attitudes and biases.
  2. Identify multiple examples of the dangers of binary thinking.
  3. Employ self-interventions to help avoid the pitfalls of binary attitudes.
