General CEU: Insights into Behavior: Comparative Analysis of Assessment Methods

Insights into Behavior: Comparative Analysis of Assessment Methods is the kind of topic that looks straightforward until it collides with the speed, ambiguity, and competing demands of clinic sessions and day-to-day service delivery. In Comparative Analysis of Assessment Methods, for this course, the practical stakes show up in stronger conceptual consistency and better translational decision making, not in abstract discussion alone.

Course Description

A functional analysis is often regarded as the gold standard in applied behavior analysis for determining the function of maladaptive behaviors. This symposium will explore current attitudes and applications of functional analysis in various settings, highlighting the field's perspectives and clinical insights. The first study to be discussed replicates and extends the seminal survey by Oliver et al., (2015) examining how the field's perspectives, practices, and training regarding functional analysis have evolved over the last decade. This study aims to determine if new assessment methodologies and increased awareness of common practices have influenced how behavior analysts evaluate their clients' behavior functions. The second presentation will focus on an applied study comparing the clinical effects of trial-based functional analysis versus descriptive assessments for determining treatment in the home setting. Recognizing the barriers that practicing BCBAs face, such as time and space limitations, this study explores which assessments are most applicable and effective in the home environment. The symposium will conclude with a third presenter who will summarize the key findings from the presentations, offering a critical analysis of their implications for application and research. The third presentation will identify gaps in the current literature and propose areas for future research, fostering a dialogue on advancing applied behavior analysis through functional analysis approaches. This symposium aims to provide attendees with an understanding of recent developments in functional analysis, equipping practitioners and researchers with the knowledge to enhance their clinical practice and contribute to the ongoing evolution of the field.
