I Get By with a Little Help from My Friends: Skill Building in a Comprehensive Group Service Model is the kind of topic that looks straightforward until it collides with the speed, ambiguity, and competing demands of language assessment, teaching sessions, caregiver coaching, and natural communication routines. In I Get By with a Little Help from My Friends: Skill Building in a Comprehensive Group Service Model, for this course, the practical stakes show up in clearer case conceptualization, better instructional targets, and stronger generalization, not in abstract discussion alone.

One-on-one (1:1) instruction provides the foundation for skill acquisition, allowing for individualized support and reinforcement. As children progress, social skills teaching in group settings fosters peer interactions, communication, and cooperation. To ensure meaningful learning, behavior analysts must incorporate group social skills teaching to promote generalization of skills across natural environments. Naturalistic Environment Teaching (NET) enhances engagement by embedding learning opportunities within familiar and motivating contexts. By integrating social skills instruction into real-world settings, children gain practical experience applying learned behaviors. Enjoyable activities, such as play and interactive tasks, increase motivation and promote long-term skill retention when taught in context, with peers. Behavior analysts must carefully design interventions that balance structured teaching with functional, real-life applications. The combination of direct instruction, social integration, group instruction and collaboration with caregivers supports a well-rounded developmental trajectory. Ultimately, these strategies empower children with autism to become more independent and socially engaged in everyday life. This talk will explore the intersection of group instructions, 1:1 services, NET and group instruction that promotes skill acquisition, generalization and real-world application for greater independence and social engagement.
