General CEU: How Can We Make Conditioned Reinforcers Count? Translational Research on Variables Influencing Conditioned Reinforcer Efficacy

How Can We Make Conditioned Reinforcers Count. Translational Research on Variables Influencing Conditioned Reinforcer Efficacy belongs in serious BCBA study because it shapes whether behavior-analytic decisions stay useful once they leave a clean training example and enter case conceptualization, intervention design, staff training, and literature-informed problem solving.

Course Description

Conditioned reinforcement is fundamental to the science of behavior, with important implications spanning the basic-applied continuum within behavior analysis. This symposium includes two data-based presentations that will focus on quantitative characteristics of the Pavlovian processes which underly conditioned reinforcement effects, followed by a discussion. The first presentation describes a sequential evaluation of procedures designed to establish praise as a conditioned reinforcer. Researchers evaluated how varying the time between conditioning trials influenced the efficacy of praise in facilitating skill acquisition for individuals with autism. The second presentation describes an experiment guided by the matching law. Researchers evaluated the effects of the relative rate and value of conditioned reinforcement on college students' choice in a concurrent observing response procedure. The data presented in both talks demonstrate the utility of quantitative analyses of parameters of conditioned reinforcement, with important implications for establishing, evaluating, and maintaining conditioned reinforcers in research and practice.

What You'll Learn

  1. Describe how Pavlovian conditioning processes underlie the establishment and efficacy of conditioned reinforcers in behavior analysis.
  2. Analyze how varying the timing between conditioning trials influences the effectiveness of praise as a conditioned reinforcer.
  3. Evaluate how the matching law applies to understanding the effects of relative rate and value on conditioned reinforcer efficacy.
