Staff turnover is among the most consequential operational problems in ABA service delivery. When a trained behavior technician leaves a caseload mid-treatment, the disruption extends far beyond the operational inconvenience: clients lose a relationship that often functions as a primary source of social reinforcement, behavioral momentum is interrupted, and maintenance of recently acquired skills is at risk.

Dr. Ivy Man Sum Chung is the founder and Executive Director of Sum of Learning, an ABA agency based in Seattle, Washington. In 2013, she founded Sum of Learning with two goals in mind: 1) to extend support to culturally and linguistically diverse families, and 2) to mentor and groom the next generation of ABA practitioners. Prior to founding Sum of Learning, Dr. Chung spent 5 years and played a pivotal role as a member of a pioneering team tasked with establishing a behavioral health division within a national healthcare organization. During this time, she gained valuable experiences in the administrative and billing aspects of running an ABA business, developed and implemented a comprehensive staff training program, and recognized the importance of mentorship within the profession, which ultimately led to the creation of Sum of Learning. Dr. Chung has been in the field of ABA since 2005. She received her Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of Washington in 2016, where her research focused on evidence-based staff training, parent coaching, and instructional techniques that improved efficiency of instruction for learners with autism spectrum disorders.
