A maintenance probe checks whether a learner still performs a mastered skill without ongoing prompts or reinforcement; it answers whether the skill lasts over time on its own. Maintenance probes are conducted after a skill is mastered, on a planned schedule at increasingly spaced intervals (for example, one week, two weeks, and one month post-mastery), not while active teaching is still underway.
