Generalization and maintenance are not outcomes that happen automatically after a skill is acquired — they are clinical goals that must be explicitly targeted with the same precision applied to initial skill acquisition. Despite their centrality to meaningful behavior change, generalization and maintenance are among the most commonly underprogrammed aspects of ABA practice.
