General CEU: Flexible Futures: Tailoring Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for Neurodiverse Clients

Flexible Futures: Tailoring Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for Neurodiverse Clients belongs in serious BCBA study because it shapes whether behavior-analytic decisions stay useful once they leave a clean training example and enter case conceptualization, intervention design, staff training, and literature-informed problem solving. In Flexible Futures: Tailoring Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for Neurodiverse Clients, for this course, the practical stakes show up in stronger conceptual consistency and better translational decision making, not in abstract discussion alone.

Course Description

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is increasingly utilized within the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), particularly in work with caregivers. However, its direct application with autistic clients, especially across all six domains of the ACT hexaflex, remains underexplored. This applied demonstration presents a systematic adaptation of ACT for two nine-year-old neurodiverse clients who initially scored low in the domains of present moment awareness and cognitive defusion, as assessed by the Child Psychological Flexibility Questionnaire (CPFQ). Two evidence informed ACT curricula, Accept. Identify. Move (AIM) curriculum and The ACT Workbook for Kids were implemented with individualized modifications. These included breaking down abstract concepts into discrete, teachable components, simplifying and personalizing metaphors, incorporating visual supports tailored to the clients' interests and communication styles, and using shaping procedures to promote psychological flexibility. Observable improvements were recorded, including increases in CPFQ self-report scores and decreases in whining and tantrum behaviors. This demonstration offers a creative and replicable approach to integrating ACT processes within ABA practice for younger clients, highlighting the value of individualized, behaviorally grounded modifications.

What You'll Learn

  1. Identify at least one developmentally appropriate activity to target each of the six domains of the ACT hexaflex (e.g., present moment, defusion, self-as-context, values, committed action, acceptance) for use with neurodiverse clients.
  2. Design or adapt visual supports to accommodate individual learning styles and support understanding of abstract ACT concepts in autistic children.
  3. Select and implement appropriate methods for collecting observable, behavioral data related to psychological flexibility and associated ACT processes.
