Supervision CEU: Failure to Launch: Why too many BCBA careers fail before they reach their potential

Behavior analysis is among the fastest-growing healthcare fields, with BCBA certifications increasing at a rate that reflects substantial societal investment in the science and its applications. Yet beneath this growth trajectory, a different pattern is developing: new BCBAs are entering the field in record numbers and leaving, or diminishing, at rates that represent a profound waste of human capital, training investment, and clinical potential.

Course Description

A series of factors have evolved over the last two decades to shine light on behavior analysis and make it one of the fasted growing segments in healthcare. This has brought much warranted positive attention and support for the science, research, funding, and application of our work for the communities around us. However, behavior analysist's themselves have not fared so well during this rapid growth period. Although record numbers of new behavior analysts are being certified, there is a quiet trend building among these new certificants which includes high levels of stress, burnout, and failure within the field. While higher levels of stress for new clinicians in any field are to be expected, this presentation will site evidence these levels are higher in the behavior analytic field and have the potential to undermine much of the progress that has been made over the last several decades. This presentation will review the unique factors within the ABA field which are leading to higher-than-expected levels of burnout and failure within the field and make specific recommendations for behavior analysts, employers, and the field of autism treatment services.

What You'll Learn

  1. What kind of employment, positions, and supervision new and aspiring clinicians should be seeking.
  2. What responsibilities companies and organizations who employ behavior analysts hold and how they can stop being part of the problem.
  3. Describe the necessity to embrace interdisciplinary practice and integrate with broader education and healthcare.
