General CEU: Facilitating an interdisciplinary approach in psychotropic medication management

Facilitating an interdisciplinary approach in psychotropic medication management belongs in serious BCBA study because it shapes whether behavior-analytic decisions stay useful once they leave a clean training example and enter joint consultation, shared care planning, school-team communication, and interdisciplinary handoffs. In Facilitating an interdisciplinary approach in psychotropic medication management, for this course, the practical stakes show up in clearer roles, fewer duplicated efforts, and better coordinated intervention, not in abstract discussion alone.

Course Description

There has been a rising trend in pharmaceutical interventions for individuals diagnosed with autism and other developmental disabilities in addition to the rising need for behavioral interventions. It is not uncommon for service recipients to be receiving psychotropic medication in addition to behavioral treatment concurrently. Practitioners are commonly told to consider effects of medications during service delivery; however, this typically is not covered in the practitioner's formal education by coursework or training in interdisciplinary collaboration. Collaboration may best begin through gaining an understanding of prescriber practices and preliminary understanding of psychopharmacology. The purpose of this panel is to bring perspectives of a behavior analyst and nurse practitioner to discuss multidisciplinary perspectives and support of clients who receive both behavioral and pharmaceutical interventions.

What You'll Learn

  1. List different classes of drugs used to treat challenging behavior.
  2. Describe the role of a prescriber, their perspectives, and considerations in prescribing.
  3. Describe methods for collaborating across disciplines for the benefit of shared clients.
