General CEU: Evolving a More Nurturing Society

Evolving a More Nurturing Society is the kind of topic that looks straightforward until it collides with the speed, ambiguity, and competing demands of case conceptualization, intervention design, staff training, and literature-informed problem solving. In Evolving a More Nurturing Society, for this course, the practical stakes show up in stronger conceptual consistency and better translational decision making, not in abstract discussion alone.

Course Description

The United States is in the midst of the most significant period in its history. We have a choice between two distinct sets of values. Over the past fifty years, advocates for free-market economics have argued that encouraging people and corporations to pursue their own economic wellbeing will ensure the highest levels of freedom and prosperity. At the time, there was reason to believe that this was true. However, the result of encouraging everyone to pursue their own wealth has resulted in the highest rates of inequality, health disparities, and premature death of any developed country. However, during this same period behavioral science research has shown that environments that nurture people's wellbeing result in better health, fewer disparities in health, and lower rates of premature death. In this talk, I will review the evidence that communities that nurture wellbeing have better health and prosperity, and less crime, depression, anxiety, discrimination, and poverty. Science cannot tell us what our values should be. Values are a matter of choice. However, behavioral science has shown the benefits of choosing to promote nurturing environments. I will describe the key steps that behavior analysts can take to promote the values and behaviors that bring the nation to a place where most people thrive.

Ph.D.

Anthony Biglan Ph.D. is a Senior Scientist at Oregon Research Institute and President of Values to Action. His book, The Nurture Effect: How the science of human behavior can improve our lives and our world, describes how behavioral science research has brought us to the point where it is possible to evolve a society in which virtually every person is living a productive life in caring relationships with others. His new book, Rebooting Capitalism: How we can forge a society that works for everyone, explains how we evolved a form of capitalism over the last 50 years that has impoverished millions of Americans, undermined the regulation of harmful business practices, and corrupted most of the major sectors of society. Values to Action was created to foster the reforms called for in Rebooting Capitalism through the creation of local Action Circles.
