Course Description

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is fundamentally rooted in the scientific model (Baer et al., 1968), requiring analytic methods to establish experimental control and ensuring procedures are replicable. This foundation makes ABA ideally suited to a scientist-practitioner approach to both service delivery and knowledge advancement (Dorsey & Harper, 2018). Yet, too often, practitioners eager to contribute to research hit frustrating roadblocks, such as limited mentorship, ethical hurdles, or a lack of resources (e.g., LeBlanc et al., 2018; Normand & Donohue, 2022). But here's the good news: these barriers aren't insurmountable! This workshop will equip you with the tools to break through them and start making real research contributions. We'll dive into everything from crafting compelling research questions and designing solid experimental protocols to securing funding, collaborating with universities, and navigating ethics approval. By the end, you'll have a clear roadmap to turn your research ideas into reality and to help drive meaningful change in the field of ABA.

What You'll Learn

  1. Assess whether research projects and research activities adhere to "Section 6 - Responsibility in Research" of the Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts®.
  2. Determine which clinical tasks in their everyday practice as listed on the BCBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.) ® are the activities of a scientist-practitioner.
  3. Identify independent and dependent variables in clinical ABA practice to write research questions that could feasibly be answered with a clinical research project.
