General CEU: Defining and Measuring Caregiver Engagement: Implications for Effective Implementation of Behavioral and Educational Interventions

Defining and Measuring Caregiver Engagement: Implications for Effective Implementation of Behavioral and Educational Interventions belongs in serious BCBA study because it shapes whether behavior-analytic decisions stay useful once they leave a clean training example and enter caregiver coaching, home routines, team meetings, and values-sensitive decision making. In Defining and Measuring Caregiver Engagement: Implications for Effective Implementation of Behavioral and Educational Interventions, for this course, the practical stakes show up in better alignment between intervention and the family context in which it must survive, not in abstract discussion alone.

Course Description

Caregiver involvement plays a vital role in the long-term success of behavior analytic interventions. Clearly defining and measuring caregiver engagement is a critical first step towards expanding research in this area. This symposium brings together three presentations examining caregiver engagement in varied practice settings. The first presentation reviews the literature on engagement across related fields, and discusses caregiver engagement as a manipulable dependent variable to be explored in future research. The second presentation analyzes utilization of caregiver training insurance codes in the context of clinic-based behavior analytic service delivery, discussing potential reasons for underutilization and recommendations for increasing utilization. The third presentation examines county-level usage data of an online parenting intervention, highlighting several measures of engagement and trends over time. All three presentations will discuss barriers to caregiver engagement, practical recommendations, and future research directions.

What You'll Learn

  1. Describe a behavioral definition of engagement and identify associated outcomes of high and low engagement in varied practice settings.
