Current issues and new frontiers in the application of behavior analysis in zoos belongs in serious BCBA study because it shapes whether behavior-analytic decisions stay useful once they leave a clean training example and enter animal care routines, enrichment planning, staff consultation, and welfare review. In Current issues and new frontiers in the application of behavior analysis in zoos, for this course, the practical stakes show up in stronger welfare decisions, better staff uptake, and clearer use of behavior analysis in zoological settings, not in abstract discussion alone.

Join Free →Twenty years ago, "behavior analysis" was largely an unknown term in the zoological field, though basic principles of operant learning were widely used in animal care. In the ensuing years, the breadth and depth of the science of behavior analysis has become better recognized among staff at zoos and aquariums. Zoo professionals increasingly pursue opportunities for education in behavior analysis and collaboration with behavior analysts. These developments have produced changes to the landscape of this area of application. Today, we are moving beyond recognition to other areas of focus. The rich behavior-analytic experimental literature has much to contribute to the translational refinement of practical tools in husbandry and medical training. Historical separation of training and enrichment into distinct categories in the zoological field has created a need for synthesis of behavior-analytic concepts. Increased interest in behavior analysis education and practice raises questions about clarification of professional roles. I will review some of these changes and areas of progress, and note some new challenges and opportunities on the horizon.
