General CEU: The Messy Middle: Effects of Post-Partum Depression and Anxiety with BCBA Moms

The Messy Middle: Effects of Post-Partum Depression and Anxiety with BCBA Moms belongs in serious BCBA study because it shapes whether behavior-analytic decisions stay useful once they leave a clean training example and enter clinic sessions and day-to-day service delivery. In The Messy Middle: Effects of Post-Partum Depression and Anxiety, for this course, the practical stakes show up in safe, humane intervention that respects health variables and daily-life feasibility, not in abstract discussion alone.

Course Description

Oftentimes, we open a social media platform and see pictures of people posting about their glowing pregnancy followed by pictures of a smiling family and a happy baby. But what about the middle part – the messy middle that involves fluctuations in hormones and spit up? Women are expected to innately have the skills to nurture at all stages and our field expects us to be competent as well. This is the challenge for the BCBA mom who struggles with both as they adapt to parenthood. Current research suggests that maternal mental health is not a priority in the United States despite that Post-Partum Depression (PPD) is experienced on average by one in seven mothers in the in the US (Postpartum Support International, 2019). In this lecture, we will discuss data from survey results of current BCBA's experiences with PPD and review social science research on variables that contribute to the onset of PPD for the working parent. Finally, the audience will be educated on behavior analytic strategies and interventions that can support the BCBA parent that experiences post-partum disorders.

What You'll Learn

  1. Analyze the prevalence and symptoms of post-partum depression and anxiety as they affect BCBA mothers in clinical practice.
  2. Evaluate how fluctuations in maternal mental health impact professional competency and the dual demands of parenthood and clinical work.
  3. Identify support strategies and accommodations that can help BCBA mothers navigate the intersection of clinical practice and early parenthood.
