General CEU: Brain-Aligned Behavior Analysis: Combining Brain Science and Behavior Science to Support Emotional Regulation

Brain-Aligned Behavior Analysis: Combining Brain Science and Behavior Science to Support Emotional Regulation is the kind of topic that looks straightforward until it collides with the speed, ambiguity, and competing demands of caregiver coaching, home routines, team meetings, and values-sensitive decision making. In Brain-Aligned Behavior Analysis: Combining Brain Science and Behavior Science to Support Emotional Regulation, for this course, the practical stakes show up in better alignment between intervention and the family context in which it must survive, not in abstract discussion alone.

Course Description

In recent years, the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has prioritized the use of trauma-informed, compassionate, and culturally responsive practices (Hugh-Pennie et al., 2022; Rajaraman et al., 2021). In adjacent fields, such as education and psychology, the role of brain processes and neural mechanisms in emotional regulation has been thoroughly examined and discussed (Cowan et al., 2016; Desautels, 2020; Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2018). In this session, attendees will learn fundamental concepts of brain science that are crucial for understanding emotional regulation and will subsequently enhance practitioners' use of compassionate behavior analytic practices that are aligned with brain science. This presentation will (a) discuss key components of the brain science of emotional regulation, (b) explore applications of brain science and emotional regulation in ABA, and (c) provide self-reflection and evaluation tools to enhance the use of emotional regulation strategies in behavior analytic practice. By the end of the presentation, attendees will have a comprehensive understanding of how to integrate brain science with ABA to create effective and individualized interventions to support emotional regulation.

What You'll Learn

  1. Define key concepts of emotional regulation, including the roles of the limbic system, prefrontal cortex, amygdala, hippocampus, and brain stem.
  2. Identify emotional regulation strategies that can be used to support and improve emotional regulations for individuals receiving ABA services.
  3. Describe methods for assessing effectiveness of emotional regulation strategies with clients.
