Ethics CEU: Assessing and Addressing Scope of Competence in Sexuality and Behavior Analysis

Scope of competence is one of the most frequently encountered ethical dilemmas in behavior analysis, and nowhere is this more pressing than in the area of sexuality. This course, presented by Shane Spiker, directly addresses the gap between the near-certainty that behavior analysts will encounter sexuality-related behavioral concerns during their careers and the stark reality that most graduate training programs provide little to no preparation in this area.

Course Description

Ethical dilemmas come in all shapes and forms, but one of the most common dilemmas behavior analysts face relates to scope of competence. As a general rule, there is a great need, and not enough behavior analysts to support those needs. Further, many behavior analysts are not adequately trained to address specialized concerns, more specifically concerns related to sexuality. Despite that lack of scope, behavior analysts will be guaranteed to come into contact with sexuality related behavioral concerns through their career. In this talk, Dr. Shane T. Spiker will discuss strategies for evaluating and improving scope of competence in sexuality and behavior analytic work.

What You'll Learn

  1. Define and describe dilemmas related to scope of competence.
  2. Identify assessment tools for assessing scope of competence related to sexuality.
  3. Create professional goals to support development of training, supervision, and mentorship in sexuality.
