An Approach to Assessing Challenging Behavior in Early Education Settings matters because it changes what a BCBA notices when decisions have to hold up in busy classrooms and teacher-managed routines. In An Approach to Assessing Challenging Behavior in Early Education Settings, for this course, the practical stakes show up in feasible school-based support, stronger collaboration, and better student participation, not in abstract discussion alone.

ABA can be applied in educational settings to address the unique needs of students who display increased instances of challenging behavior such as aggression and disruption (Hanley et al., 2007). In this session, we will describe our approach to the assessment of challenging behavior displayed by young students in early education settings. We will describe the assessment of students' challenging behavior at the individual level and at the classroom level. We will describe our use of Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and the Prevent Teach Reinforce for Young Children (PTR-YC) model as an approach to assessing challenging behavior in the school settings (Dunlap et al., 2022). We will also discuss the importance of preliminary classroom-wide assessments to analyze the "Baseline Classroom Conditions (BCCs)" (Kestner et al., 2018) prior to conducting FBAs. We will discuss how the results of these assessments are used as part of the consultation process to decrease challenging behavior and improve learning outcomes. Finally, we will describe how assessment results inform effective interventions and how one can collaborate with teachers in the implementation of these interventions.
