Join Free →Cultural responsiveness is a pivotal consideration in behavior analytic services. This symposium features two studies that address the crucial need for increased cultural awareness in the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA). The first presentation will describe a survey study of behavior analytic service providers and recipients in Ontario, Canada. Respondents were asked about their demographic profiles and their perceptions of service providers' cultural responsiveness in practice. The results of this study highlight the need for active and ongoing collaboration between behavior analysts and the families they serve. The second study compiles 49 peer-reviewed articles on cultural responsiveness in ABA. With the increasing amount of literature on cultural responsiveness, clinicians and researchers may struggle to discern the most relevant strategies. The recommendations from those articles were extracted and a thematic analysis was conducted to categorize recommendations into distinct themes. This symposium will provide suggestions for engaging in culturally responsive practice and serve as a practical guide for navigating the expanding literature on cultural responsiveness.

Catalina N. Rey, PhD, BCBA-D, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Munroe-Myer Institute’s Early Intervention program in the Integrated Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders (iCASD). She received her master’s degree in Organizational Behavior Management (OBM) and PhD in behavior analysis from Florida Institute of Technology. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Kennedy Krieger Institute and another one at the Vermont Center on Behavior and Health at the University of Vermont.
