Join Free →A primary goal of behavior analysis is the prediction and influence of behavior. This is largely achieved through the identification of functional relations between behaviors and the stimulating environment. Behavior-behavior relations are rejected as insufficient to meeting these goals. Although this environment-behavior approach has been highly successful when applied to public behaviors, extensions to private events has been limited. This paper discusses technical and conceptual challenges to the study of private events. We then introduce the neurobiological-behavioral approach which seeks to understand private behavior as environmentally controlled in part by private neurobiological stimuli which may enter into functional relations with both public and private behaviors. This analysis builds upon several current approaches to private events, delineates private behaviors and private stimulation, and emphasizes the reciprocal interaction between the two. The neurobiological approach is demonstrated through an application example, and the strengths of the approach are highlighted as are the various functions neurobiological stimuli may acquire. Finally, we discuss important contributions to understanding private events from neuroscience and describe applications in brain-computer interfaces.
