Ethics CEU: Humility: The Ninth Dimension of Behavior Analysis

The seven dimensions of applied behavior analysis, articulated in the foundational 1968 literature, have served as the field's guiding framework for over five decades. These dimensions, applied, behavioral, analytic, technological, conceptually systematic, effective, and generality, define what makes an intervention truly behavior analytic and distinguish the field from other approaches to behavior change.

Course Description

In our coursework, we are taught that the seven dimensions of behavior analysis serve as our guiding principles. However, as our field has evolved and matured, we have encountered some challenges that may not be fully addressed by the original seven dimensions. Penney et al. (2023) proposed an additional dimension: compassion. Despite this inclusion, we might still be overlooking a crucial aspect of our work: humility. In this talk, Dr. Shane T. Spiker will explore the benefits and implications of incorporating humility as an additional dimension in our practices.

What You'll Learn

  1. Examine the original seven dimensions, as well as the proposed eighth dimension, within the context of current clinical practice.
  2. Examine the current trend in behavior analysis towards collaborative and compassionate practices.
  3. Describe behaviors associated with cultural and clinical humility and explain how these behaviors can be integrated into daily practice.
