01Research in Context

01

What this study did

Mazurek et al. (2019) tested a new way to speed up autism diagnosis for toddlers. They ran a pilot program called ECHO Autism STAT. Community pediatricians got two days of hands-on training, then joined weekly video calls with autism experts for six months.

The doctors brought real cases to the calls. They asked questions and got feedback. The team tracked how confident the doctors felt about spotting autism early.

02

What they found

The pilot worked. Doctors said they felt much better at diagnosing autism after the program. Families got answers faster. No more waiting months for a specialist.

03

How this fits with other research

Waldron et al. (2023) used the same ECHO model with autistic adults. Doctors again felt more confident, but only after the teachers tweaked the lessons. This shows the toddler version can grow to serve other ages.

Love et al. (2024) and Burrows et al. (2018) tested a different coach-style program called COMPASS. They used stronger designs—randomized trials—and still saw big gains for students. Their success backs up the idea that coaching community providers works.

Tonge et al. (2014) took yet another path: they trained parents of preschoolers. Kids’ skills improved. Together these studies paint one clear picture—when you boost local capacity, kids get better services faster, no matter which method you pick.

04

Why it matters

Long waitlists hurt toddlers who need early help. ECHO Autism STAT gives you a ready-made recipe: short boot-camp plus weekly expert calls. You can copy it in your region. Partner with local pediatricians. Offer them live case reviews. Track their confidence with a quick survey. Faster diagnosis means earlier intervention, and that changes a child’s whole trajectory.

03Original abstract

Although early diagnosis of autism is critical for promoting access to early intervention, many children experience significant diagnostic delays. Shortages of healthcare providers, limited capacity at autism centers, and geographic and socioeconomic challenges contribute to these delays. The current pilot study examined the feasibility of a new model for training community-based primary care providers (PCPs) in underserved areas in screening and diagnosis of young children at highest risk for autism. By combining hands-on training in standardized techniques with ongoing virtual mentorship and practice, the program emphasized both timely diagnosis and appropriate referral for more comprehensive assessment when necessary. Results indicated improvements in PCP practice and self-efficacy, and feasibility of the model for enhancing local access to care.
