Trial-based functional analysis and functional communication training in an early childhood setting.
Two-minute classroom FAs plus FCT can quickly replace problem behavior with communication in preschool special-ed.

What this study did
Three preschoolers in a special-ed classroom acted out during circle time and free play.
The teacher ran 2-minute trial-based functional analyses right at the table. Each test took only a few minutes and fit inside normal routines.
After the quick FA showed why each child acted out, the team taught a simple communication response instead.
What they found
Problem behavior dropped for every child once they could ask for the same thing with words or pictures.
Circle time ran smoother and the kids used their new requests with different adults and toys.
How this fits with other research
Gerber et al. (2011) and Corr et al. (2025) both say FCT is now a well-established, evidence-based treatment. Griffith et al. (2012) is one of the classroom studies those big reviews count as proof.
Lindgren et al. (2020) later showed parents can coach the same FCT at home through Zoom and still cut problem behavior by 98%. The 2012 preschool data gave early proof that the package works before telehealth made delivery easier.
Salzer et al. (2025) even used the same 2-minute trial FA format on dogs. Matching results across species hints the method is solid when time or space is tight.
Why it matters
You do not need a separate clinic room or long sessions to find the function. Run brief trial-based FAs during naturally occurring activities, then roll straight into FCT. The whole process can finish in a week of preschool days and the gains show up in group routines. Try it when referrals pile up or pull-out time is limited.

Problem behavior is common in early childhood special education classrooms. Functional communication training (FCT; Carr & Durand, 1985) may reduce problem behavior but requires identification of its function. The trial-based functional analysis (FA) is a method that can be used to identify problem behavior function in schools. We conducted trial-based FAs and FCT with 3 children in an early childhood special education setting. All trial-based FAs resulted in identification of behavioral functions, and subsequent FCT led to reductions in problem behavior and increases in communication.
